Prefabricated housing has long since ceased to mean the disfigurement of the urban landscape with monotonous grey boxes. Particularly in Central Europe and Russia, modern assembly methods and 100 years of experience in planning prefabricated buildings and constructing with large panels are experiencing a renaissance. The "new urban municipality of Berlin", also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, it's population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. Professor Pekka Pitkanen (1927-2018) was one of the most significant Finnish architects of the post-war period. He is known as a master of concrete buildings and as a staunch supporter of modernist approach to architecture. He won numerous commissions by architectural competitions. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (1963-1967) in Turku is usually considered as Pitkanen's main work. From 1950's to 1980's Pitkanen built in Turku numerous residential and commercial buildings, often in co-operation with the building company Urakoitsijat Oy. Together with Ola Laiho and Ilpo Raunio, Pitkanen planned the extension of the Finnish Parliament (1972-1978). Late in his career Pitkanen focused on public buildings, the finish of the career was the Turku court building, completed in 1997

Boris Iofan is best known as the architect behind the Palace of the Soviets. Yet his style was not limited to the Socialist Clas-sicism that flourished under Stalin. Rath-er, Iofan's architectural language evolved throughout his lifetime, from his eclecti-cist beginnings in Rome, to the grandeur of the wedding-cake style in the 1930s, to his incorporation of concrete panels under Khrushchev.
