Prefabricated housing has long since ceased to mean the disfigurement of the urban landscape with monotonous grey boxes. Particularly in Central Europe and Russia, modern assembly methods and 100 years of experience in planning prefabricated buildings and constructing with large panels are experiencing a renaissance. Whereas predominantly in Moscow - the largest European metropolis with seventeen million - prefabricated housing is an essential instrument for the provision of residential assistance, prefabrication methods in Germany and Switzerland, for example, are used to build exclusive properties. This construction manual examines the potential of prefabricated housing on structural, historical and architectural grounds. In addition to an insight into the methods of production and assembly, roughly twenty selected examples are presented in large-format photographs, plans rich in detail and meaningful diagrams, providing a contribution to the discussion on affordable housing

With essays by Erik Stenberg, Christine Varga-Harris, and more, the book tells the story of concrete panels at the centre of debates in the modernising and industrialising processes of architecture • Can concrete panels fly? Though at first it sounds improbable, the answer to this question is yes, they did fly through the world, supported by other structures, both physical and mental. They flew from the factory floor to the building site, from one country to another, and through the most diverse array of media: from paintings to posters, cartoons, photography, film, toys, and even in the design of opera stages. During the second half of the twentieth century, concrete panels were seen soaring across the skies • When manual labor moved to automated mass-production, and new concrete element techniques rapidly spread producing billions of square meters of housing across the globe, the flying panel became the ultimate icon

The "new urban municipality of Berlin", also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, it's population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin. The two volumes of "Unfinished Metropolis" are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin

Africa - a continent of small villages in the jungle and savannah? Certainly not. The urbanisation of the continent is advancing rapidly, while African cities and metropolitan regions are among the fastest growing in the world. Africa Drawn presents one hundred of the most connected and important cities of the continent. A visual feast of three hundred images and masterfully drawn plans illustrates contemporary and historical place-making actions in Africa. The result is simultaneously an artistic and visually fascinating documentation of African urban space and a convincing analysis of it's structure and morphology, thus providing a spatial point of departure for all interested parties. The drawings are accompanied by introductory texts and, for the first time, render possible a comparison of the diverse urban form on the continent

The ancient city of Asmara is the capital of Eritrea and it's largest settlement. Its beautiful architecture was rediscovered by outsiders in the early 1990s. In this book, the authors offer an original analysis of the colonial city, providing a history not only of the physical and visible urban reality, but also of a second, invisible city as it exists in the imagination. The colonial city becomes a fantastical set of cities where each one reflects the others as if in a kaleidoscope. This ambitious book breaks new ground, and moves us a little further along in the attempt to read Asmara into contemporary theory. This book brings together scholars from a multiplicity of disciplines who have shown the ways in which colonial and postcolonial criticism has served as a platform for new, diversified readings of Asmara, which compile cultural and social history, critical and political theory, anthropological fieldwork, visual culture studies, literary and cinematic analysis, gender studies, diaspora and urban studies
