Alexey Shchusev (1873-1949) was one of the most celebrated architects of the Soviet Union, famous for Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow. Not only a gifted designer of many prominent buildings, his career was quite unique and closely intertwined with the turbulent course of Russian and Soviet history. He was one of the very few architects who managed to rise to the top of the architectural hierarchy under the tsars and then to repeat this success under Soviet rule. Already before the Revolution of 1917, Shchusev was an acclaimed Revivalist architect, wellknown for his church designs and Moscow's Kazan Station. In the 1920s, he became a renowned Constructivist. Following the official renunciation of Avant-Garde architecture ordered by Stalin, Shchusev swiftly became an advocate of Socialist Classicism, designing many projects in the dictator's favoured Empire Style in order to satisfy the Stalinist state's needs for monumental representation

Boris Iofan is best known as the architect behind the Palace of the Soviets. Yet his style was not limited to the Socialist Clas-sicism that flourished under Stalin. Rath-er, Iofan's architectural language evolved throughout his lifetime, from his eclecti-cist beginnings in Rome, to the grandeur of the wedding-cake style in the 1930s, to his incorporation of concrete panels under Khrushchev. This book presents a collec-tion of essays that chart the development of the architect's variegated career that spanned nearly six decades

The Soviet avant-garde architecture of the 1920s to the mid-1930s has increasingly been attracting attention from researchers worldwide. Yet, in spite of this, entire regions remain unstudied. One of these is the south of Russia. Based on extensive research, this guidebook aims to correct the omission. It explores Russia's South and North Caucasus federal districts: Astrakhanskaya, Volgogradskaya, and Rostovskaya regions, Krasnodarsky kray, Crimea, Kalmykiya, Mineralnye Vody, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkariya, Karachaevo-Cherkesiya, Severnaya Osetiya, and Chechnya. During the Second World War, the south of Russia was the scene of fighting and mass destruction. Post-war reconstruction saw many buildings redesigned in the neoclassical style and the loss of an entire stratum of avant-garde structures

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, this book for the first time ever looks at the artefacts left behind on the moon from the perspective of architecture • The book looks at every single mission - manned and unmanned - that has actually landed on the moon. It covers the time of the beginning of the Soviet and American space race with the landing of Luna 2 in 1959, to the present with China's Chang'e 3 moon rover. This architectural guide differentiates itself from other scientific and educational books through it's abstract approach to the topic of architecture on the moon. The content does not feature science fiction, but rather the question of what exists and what implications these bizarre structures hold for the future of architecture on other planets - as these topics are quite pertinent in today's world of the commercialisation of spaceflight, with SpaceX and NASA planning to take humans to Mars in the next 15 years

The Melnikov House, a building designed by architect Konstantin Melnikov in Moscow for his family (1927-1929), is an icon of the architectural avant-garde. The house was originally built as an experimental cylindrical house to test out Konstantin Melnikov's very own concept of mass construction of residential estates. This book covers the house in its current condition - during its transformation from a family home to the State Melnikovs Museum

The redevelopment of historical centres became an important policy field in the era of European dictatorships following the First World War. At that time historical centres were regarded as shabby and as tarnishing the desired image of a magnificent new city, of a showcase of the dictatorship. This led to the widespread demolition of older buildings. Historical streets and squares disappeared and were replaced by new apartments and workplaces for the loyal middle classes, by car-friendly roads and ostentatious new buildings. Nevertheless, the redevelopment of historical centres did not exclusively mean the eradication of the ‘old town’. The aim of the dictatorship in many cases was also the preservation, and often the cultic display, of historical testimonials to past greatness

The ancient city of Asmara is the capital of Eritrea and it's largest settlement. Its beautiful architecture was rediscovered by outsiders in the early 1990s. In this book, the authors offer an original analysis of the colonial city, providing a history not only of the physical and visible urban reality, but also of a second, invisible city as it exists in the imagination. The colonial city becomes a fantastical set of cities where each one reflects the others as if in a kaleidoscope. This ambitious book breaks new ground, and moves us a little further along in the attempt to read Asmara into contemporary theory. This book brings together scholars from a multiplicity of disciplines who have shown the ways in which colonial and postcolonial criticism has served as a platform for new, diversified readings of Asmara, which compile cultural and social history, critical and political theory, anthropological fieldwork, visual culture studies, literary and cinematic analysis, gender studies, diaspora and urban studies

The growing variety of materials available for interior applications makes the process of selecting and sampling them ever more complex and time consuming. This manual from the Construction and Design series provides concise information on the subject alongside a wealth of inspiration. It offers an overview of materials suited to particular components of a building - including walls, ceiling, and floors and objects. Both traditional and new materials are described in a knowledgeable and practical manner. It is not only a material itself that determines the appearance of a surface, but also the design and arrangement of the joins. After a material's surface, the chosen laying pattern is the next key aspect that influences its spatial effect. The book, therefore, includes a wide range of different laying patterns

The "new urban municipality of Berlin", also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, it's population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin. The two volumes of "Unfinished Metropolis" are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin
